Geauga County Low Income/Section 8/ Subsidized Housing Crisis
The low income/subsidized non-contributors of Geauga County are growing, exponentially, because our Commissioners are welcoming them with open arms. These programs are not a “hand up” but a perpetual, ongoing welfare handout.
Mary Samide denies that she has control over Section 8 housing in Geauga County. We need to find a leader who will take control and put an end to this extreme abuse of our tax dollars.
Low income and subsidized housing residents of Geauga county use a disproportionate amount of social services, police, safety and medical resources. Notably, the majority of Geauga County Juvenile Court cases come from the low-income, subsidized housing residents of Geauga County.
Mary Samide, candidate for County Commissioner told her audience that she had no hand in the latest subsidized housing project in Middlefield, Ohio, known as Casa Lucia. Samide, Jemison and Young gave the Catholic Charities $72,300 tax dollars for sidewalk improvements for Casa Lucia. (June 12, 2008, Commissioners’ Journal.)
More importantly, Samide and Jemison granted annexation of the Middlefield property for Casa Lucia on January 25, 2011, (Commissioner’s Journal.)
And Mary Samide was thrilled with the Casa Lucia project, ask Sally Bell, Director of the Department of Aging, she will confirm this. The fact that Samide now blames Middlefield Officials for bringing in this unprecedented government subsidized housing project just shows you that she cannot be trusted.
Tax dollars used from other “governmental” agencies to support this Casa Lucia project have tremendous stipulations and impact on Geauga County and our Commissioners sold us out on this project. Catholic Charities stated, “Until recently, its services had not yet stretched to rural Geauga County…” The Catholic Charities Housing Corporation feels that people have a “right” to live anywhere they prefer, even if they cannot afford to do so or have not worked to earn a home.
Traci Jemison stated, “ We are fortunate to have grants available to support this… (Habitat for Humanity)…”. And it was Traci Jemison who told a Section 8 resident that the Commissioners would always take care of the common people, he assured her that her Section 8 housing was safe.
Samide, Jemison and Young also spent or supported the expenditure of the following tax dollars on subsidized, low income housing:
-$700,000 to Catholic Charities for homeless prevention and re-housing program.
-$250,000 to support Habitat for Humanity homes in Geauga County. (Not a comprehensive figure, I am waiting for the total figure.)
-PIPP Plus program helps lower income households maintain their gas and electric service by paying a percentage of their household income instead of their actual energy bills.
-Installation of Septic Systems for low-income residents.
-Purchase of furnaces for low-income residents.
- The Geauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services has raised funds for the construction of safe and affordable housing project. Jim Adams, Director stated, “A three-year renewable grant for $483,000 from the federal government for ongoing operating costs is being pursued.” Again, they are using federal dollars which comes with all kinds of stipulations and requirements which will be imposed on our community.
In addition to all of the Geauga County Commissioner handouts, giveaways and subsidies, our county has Federal subsidized housing. There are 165 Section 8 properties in Geauga County and growing fast. The Geauga Metropolitan Housing Authority just placed an ad in the News Herald seeking new applicants! “Geauga Metropolitan Housing Authority taking Section 8 applications, Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Section 8 Housing (As of 3/22/12)
Geauga Metropolitan Housing Authority additionally provides 244 housing units for low-income residents. The residents have no time limit. This is not a “hand up”, this is a generational ongoing, no limit form of subsidized housing. GMHA residents pay 30% of their “reported” income and certain units have free utilities! They do not pay for water, sewer or trash pick up.
Geauga County is a safe and beautiful community because it was built by Americans with solid work ethics and commitment to God and family. We are seeing an increase in crime, drug abuse, on-going requests for levy increases from police and social service agencies and the devaluation of our property. And now, we are allowing the Catholic Charities to tell us who has the right to live in our community?
Homeownership comes from hard work and responsibility. Home ownership comes from integrity, tenacity, self-reliance, character and a solid work ethic.
There is a world of difference between a handout and the generational welfare mentality that has become a pervasive fixture in Geauga County, in large part due to the weak performance and lack of leadership of Mary Samide and Traci Jemison.

Thanks for an excellent letter Judy.
All of the horrors associated with gov. subsidised housing that you mentioned above are not only true but just the tip of the iceberg.
This is all part of the United Nations Agenda 21 program to urbanize country areas. Why would they be interested in doing that, you say? Think about it.... country areas are normally much more conservative, have more of a work ethic, and are far more self sufficient.... all the attributes that are contrary to U.N. Agenda 21.
Furthermore, when low income people are moved into wealthier conservative areas thay can't afford, being subsidised with your money, it is a recipie for disaster. They don't take care of YOUR property (you paid for it), crime rate goes up, your community is less safe. The Daniel Kovasik murder is a perfect example of that. Guess who they vote for.... liberal socialist commies who promise them more entitlement programs, more levies are passed and your taxes go up to support them. Now, little by little, the whole atmosphere of Geauga County starts changing. It becomes less and less conservative until it becomes liberal.... values change, politics change, you become innundated with liberal politicians who are willing to sell out the Constitution and your personal rights. There is so much more that will happen but these are some of the main points.
The socialist government agencies that administer these programs claim these people have a "RIGHT" to live where they choose. Yeah.... at our expense! This kind of philosophy destroys the work ethic that built America!
Living in a certain county or neighborhood IS NOT A RIGHT!! It comes with hard work and saving!
No one "DESERVES" to live anywhere! You live where you can afford to live! All of you Geaugans who have worked hard and saved to be able to afford to live here should know that, and fight like hell to stop this from progressing in Geauga.
I choose to live in Hawaii and I think I have a right to live there. I would like all of you to chip in and help me buy a home there.... on the ocean!.... so I can relax on the beach everyday and sip pina coladas. I am not asking you.... I am demanding you do this.... start diggin in your pockets NOW!! If I don't see some money comming in soon I will go door to door, and believe me, you DON'T want to have empty pockets when I show up at your door with my collectors! Ok..Ok.. so I was kidding.... but you get the picture. Any of you dummies who thought I was serious.... stop comming to this site.
It is liberal socialist politicians like Mary Samide and Traci Jemison who have played a big role in bringing this into Geauga. Mary has been caught in way too many lies over the years and her buddy Traci is right behind her. I would'nt believe anything either of them have to say!
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT PEOPLE!
It isn't the governments job to provide housing for people with other peoples money. It is unconstitutional.
