With Your Tax Money!!
Letter to the Editor:
Why are we paying for Geauga County employee gym memberships?
I was not surprised to see Commissioners Mary Samide, Traci Jemison and Bill Young in the Summer 2010 issue of Geauga, “A Magazine for the County”, promoting the county subsidized employee weight loss program??? Our commissioners tell us, it’s only a “$30 dollar a month stipend” per employee. And the program is so successful; they are spending more for 2010!
Why are we paying employees for something that they can do for free?
The Geauga Health District has a nutrition program. (At least they claim they do.) The Geauga Libraries have free Internet access. The Geauga Park District has 24 parks with biking, hiking and running trails. United Way service provides all kinds of nutrition and wellness programs. Our high schools have running tracks and are open for public access. Geauga County employs dozens of health and wellness professionals who I am certain would be more than happy to present free lunchtime talks and support seminars. University Hospitals of Geauga would most likely be very willing to come out and support our employees with health seminars, diabetes support and diet and exercise information. All of these resources are in our community, accessible and free.
Commissioner Mary Samide stated that the program “helps Geauga County employees lower their blood pressure…” I can only imagine what this is doing to the blood pressure of the Geauga County taxpayers who will be facing as many as 30 tax levies this November!

I didn't know Mary Samide and the other commissioners were in the health business now!
They caused my blood pressure to go sky high after reading this ....do ya think they will fork out for a gym membership for me also?!
In a conversation I had with Geauga County Administrator Dave Lair, he stated that corporations have programs like this with success and that the Commissioners are having alot of success with this program also. It is working!
I pointed out to Dave the obvious....that corporations can spend their money as they see fit....elected officials entrusted with public tax money cannot!
How successful the program is or isn't has nothing to do with anything....it is beside the point!
This is an UN-CONSTITUTIONAL use of public money! PERIOD!....END OF STORY!
No money of the peoples (tax money) is EVER to be used for another persons wants, needs, desires, emergencies, hardships, health problems, etc!!!!!!!!
The problem with alot of elected officials in Geauga and all over is that they train each other to think in the same box and can't seem to get out of it.
They look to the Ohio Revised Code, many areas of which are un-constitutional, for the authority to misspend your money. Most of these people have no idea what the Constitution says. It is sad that they know no better than to place the Ohio Revised Code in higher authority over the Constitution that was created from the blood of Patriots.
We don't need people like this holding office, who have such ignorance of our Constitution, abusing the peoples finances and rights.
Now, we all make mistakes....so if these 3 commissioners would be humble enough to admit this was a mistake and immediately discontinue the program, I personally would forgive them and ask that you all do the same.
If they are too proud and stubborn to do that, then give them a pink slip and make them look for another job!
Commissioners....this problem will NOT go away! We will all be awaiting your decision.
